Panel discussion to follow at West L.A. College

The controversial practice of fracking will be explored during a free screening of the film “Gasland,” followed by a panel discussion Saturday, September 15, at 1 p.m. at West Los Angeles College.

The college is located at 9000 Overland Ave., Culver City, CA 90230. Free parking is available in Lot 5 and the S. Parking Structure.

A coalition of three anti-fracking organizations—Frack-Free Culver City, Citizens Coalition for a Safe Community and Food & Water Watch will host the event.

Forum for small businesses

Sen. Curren Price is following up on his Prep for Success workshop for job seekers by hosting a Small Business Prep for Primes forum on Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Los Angeles College, Fine Arts Complex at 9000 Overland Ave. in Culver City.

The forum is the second in a series of events designed specifically to increase the employability of Los Angeles residents and to expand the list of qualified job applicants, including contractors, for local employers.

Played in the NFL

The body of Lawrence Jarmon, Ph.D., retired dean of student services at West Los Angeles College and former professional football player, was interred Friday at Inglewood Park Cemetery.

Jarman died in Los Angeles on July 15. He was 64.

A Los Angeles native, Jarmon attended Manual Arts High School, Los Angeles Harbor College and California State University, Los Angeles.

Gwen Thomas

Gwen-Marie Thomas, an professor in the business department at West Los Angeles College was found dead in her home; the cause of death is pending.

Noted and known for always being immaculately coifed and flawlessly made-up, the Memphis native taught her students in a way that gave them a real taste of the world of business and management.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
