Barricaded in home

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—An 89-year-old woman was fatally stabbed this afternoon, allegedly by her grandson, who barricaded himself in a home, police said.

Paramedics and police were called to the 900 block of West 41st Street in South Los Angeles at 2:10 p.m., said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Karen Rayner.

Alleged predators Franklin and Hughes linked to additional slayings

In the latest developments involving accused “Grim Sleeper” suspect Lonnie David Franklin Jr., six additional murders have been attributed to the defendant, bringing the total number of alleged killings committed between 1985 and 2007 to 16.

These additional victims were linked via a combination of forensic research, specifically DNA, and circumstantial evidence.

Both attend continuation school

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A 16-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting another 16-year-old boy inside downtown Los Angeles’ Third Street Tunnel was a member of a rival gang, and the teens had been attending a continuation high school class designed for “at-risk youths,” police said today.

The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. Tuesday just west of Hill Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Student with weapon

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—A South Los Angeles middle school was locked down today when a student said a classmate had a weapon, but none was found after a search of the campus, authorities said.

Authorities were alerted about 9:45 a.m. of the possible weapon at Carver Middle School, 4410 McKinley Ave., according to Myra Ramirez of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The student who allegedly had the weapon was found and was interviewed, and a search was conducted, but no weapon was located, Ramirez said. The lockdown was lifted about 11 a.m., she said.

Pharmacy, walk-in clinic

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a $94 million contract for the design and construction of a 136,500-square-foot outpatient facility for the Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center.

McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. won the contract for the four-story outpatient center, which will include a pharmacy, walk-in clinic and clinics for neurology and pulmonary medicine, among others. Some offices also will be renovated.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
