Vote Tuesday

Incumbent Mayor James C. Ledford Jr. has two other candidates nipping at his heels in the Palmdale mayoral election on Tuesday. They are Maggie Campbell and Desmond Kester.

Campbell holds a bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University and an honorary doctorate of divinity degree. She is the pastor of the Church of the Living God in Palmdale.

Head injuries

 PALMDALE, Calif.—A Palmdale woman and her live-in boyfriend were in custody today on suspicion of the beating death of her 2-year-old son, authorities said.

Jennifer Zolorzano, 19, and Joe Hickman, 21, were both being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

According to the sheriff’s department, the woman took her son to a hospital early Saturday morning for treatment of “head injuries she alleged occurred when the child slipped and fell while taking a bath.”

Disposal of unused and expired medications

 LOS ANGLES, Calif.—Residents can safely dispose of unused and expired medications at participating police and sheriff’s stations on Saturday, authorities said today.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Police Department will hold disposal stations as part of the Drug Enforcement Agency’s National Take-Back Day.

Darrell Logan

PALMDALE, Calif.—An armed man who was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Palmdale was identified today as 32-year-old Darrell Logan, authorities announced.

Deputies responded to the 3100 block of Heather Avenue at 11:48 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call reporting gunfire at a home, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Benjamin Grubb said.

Deputies ordered the suspect to come out of the garage, but he refused.

Deputies entered the the garage and opened fire when they encountered the armed suspect, Grubb said.

Astronauts attended ceremony

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—The California Science Center became the official owner of the space shuttle Endeavour today at a title-transfer signing ceremony attended by the astronauts who were aboard the shuttle on its final mission this summer.

The center will become the retirement home of the shuttle, which traveled 115 million miles during 25 flights.

“Please don’t scratch it,” shuttle Cmdr. Mark Kelly joked to the crowd attending the ceremony at the Science Center.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
