Hollywood by Choice

It’s that time of the year again when the networks roll out what they hope will be the new hit wonders for their station affiliates. Competition for the big three (ABC, NBC and CBS) is at an all-time high, with cable networks vying for an ever-shrinking television audience.

World renown rapper/producer Lil’ Jon was recently fired from Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” which airs on NBC. Although he made it to the final four, which also included Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin, Rock Icon Meatloaf, and Country Western singer/songwriter John Rich, Lil’ Jon apparently didn’t have the confidence that he could win it all for his charity, United Methodist Children’s Home and become the new celebrity apprentice so, he hung himself.

LaToya Jackson proved to the world she’s not to be messed with; the girl’s got grit. On season four of Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” LaToya stood up to the bullies, and those trying to get her off the show by doing what a true winner would do, take them all on and win.

If you’re watching Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” on NBC, you know by now, the sista’s are going to rule until they knock each other out of the show, and a White woman or man wins.

I believe my favorite line that I’ve heard on this show thus far came from Star Jones, when she said very bluntly, “If you’re going to take the queen out, you better kill her.” It sent chills up my spine; I laughed out loud and immediately called a friend to repeat it.

Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (RHOA) is admittedly one of my guilty pleasures. Not that I aspire to be like them, I just like the outrageousness of their actions, and wonder if they really act that way when they are not in front of the camera. The Atlanta housewives are a raunchy, backstabbing bunch who seem to settle their differences before each new season starts.

But are they for real?

Across Black America

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

California
San Diego college students and volunteers will carry out their sixth home restoration project on Wednesday, July 10 through Sunday, July 14. as part of the “Healing our Heroes’ Homes” (H3) program created by the nonprofit Embrace. The five-day effort will take place at the home of medically retired Marine Corps Capt. Sarah Bettencourt. Bettencourt served with many different units across the country during the Global War on Terrorism and developed a rare neurological disorder in 2008. With a focus to restore the homes of disabled veteran homeowners, H3 falls in line with Embrace’s mission to mobilize college-student volunteers and community members to serve less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities. The project for the Bettencourts’ home includes kitchen and bathroom remodeling, building ADA-compliant disability ramps, widening their driveway to ADA standards, widening doorways and landscaping.

The 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will showcase its five-year community research project on African American identity with the program “The Will to Adorn: African American Diversity, Style, and Identity.” This multicity collaboration examines the history and culture of the aesthetics of African Americans. The festival will be held June 26-30 and July 3-7, outdoors on the National Mall between Seventh and 14th streets. “Whether we realize it or not, we are all dress artists. The way we compose our look is a creative expression of our ideas about who we are and who we aspire to be,” said Diana N’Diaye, program curator. “This program explores the diversity of African American traditions of style, but also teaches young people the importance of documenting their own culture and saving that information for themselves and future generations.”
