A private, nonprofit hospital

LOS ANGELES - The reopening of Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital moved a step closer to reality, after the state Assembly ensured Medi-Cal funding for the facility.

"With passage of AB 2599, I am pleased that the legislature has codified the state's commitment to the University of California and the county of Los Angeles to provide financial support for the hospital," said Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

Where you’ve been shapes where you’re going

What is the definition of history? Is history important? If so, then what is the price of forgetting history? These are some of the questions I sought to answer in this article.

History is defined as follows … a continuous, systematic narrative of past events relating to a particular people, country, period, person, etc., usually written as a chronological account; chronicle.

Alice out of Wonderland and into reality

“I just want to be 11 again,” is what I always tell my friends, when I get home from a long day at work. When I was 11 all I wanted was to be 21; now at 21 all I want is to be 11 again.
At age 11, all I had to worry about was waking up on time to get to school, which was only a block away from my house, and managing to not get in any trouble by the end of the day.

Daddy’s Girl

Father knows best, Don’t worry about the rest,
His love surpasses the hurts and will chase away the flirts
that try to chase the skirts.
You’re daddy’s girl and he will introduce you to this world
Flee the voice of strangers.

Father knows best
if you listen, you’ll pass the tests
and your life won’t be in a mess, but you will profess
that you’re daddy’s girl,
so let him introduce you to this world.
You see dad framed you in his love,

Across Black America

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

California
San Diego college students and volunteers will carry out their sixth home restoration project on Wednesday, July 10 through Sunday, July 14. as part of the “Healing our Heroes’ Homes” (H3) program created by the nonprofit Embrace. The five-day effort will take place at the home of medically retired Marine Corps Capt. Sarah Bettencourt. Bettencourt served with many different units across the country during the Global War on Terrorism and developed a rare neurological disorder in 2008. With a focus to restore the homes of disabled veteran homeowners, H3 falls in line with Embrace’s mission to mobilize college-student volunteers and community members to serve less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities. The project for the Bettencourts’ home includes kitchen and bathroom remodeling, building ADA-compliant disability ramps, widening their driveway to ADA standards, widening doorways and landscaping.

The 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will showcase its five-year community research project on African American identity with the program “The Will to Adorn: African American Diversity, Style, and Identity.” This multicity collaboration examines the history and culture of the aesthetics of African Americans. The festival will be held June 26-30 and July 3-7, outdoors on the National Mall between Seventh and 14th streets. “Whether we realize it or not, we are all dress artists. The way we compose our look is a creative expression of our ideas about who we are and who we aspire to be,” said Diana N’Diaye, program curator. “This program explores the diversity of African American traditions of style, but also teaches young people the importance of documenting their own culture and saving that information for themselves and future generations.”
