30 year school teacher

MONTEREY PARK, Calif.—A former South Los Angeles-area elementary school teacher who allegedly took photos of blindfolded and gagged students with roaches on their faces or spoons of semen held to their mouths was in custody today, facing multiple charges of committing lewd acts on nearly two dozen children.

Mark Henry Berndt, 61, who taught for more than 30 years at Miramonte Elementary School, was arrested Monday at his Torrance home and jailed in lieuof $2.3 million bail, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Accused of shooting Julian Jones

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Javaris Crittenton was being held today in a downtown Los Angeles jail in connection with the killing of a 22-year-old mother in Atlanta.

Crittenton was arrested about 8 p.m. Monday at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in for a flight to Atlanta, according to Laura Eimiller of the FBI.

Alan Kimble Fahey

LANCASTER, Calif.—A 59-year-old Acton man who was convicted last month of a dozen misdemeanor counts for building a sprawling compound he dubbed “Phonehenge West” today was ordered taken into custody.

Superior Court Judge Daviann Mitchell ordered Alan Kimble Fahey to be remanded in lieu of $75,000 bail pending his sentencing, which was postponed to July 22.

Possession of Ecstasy

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.—Rapper/actor T.I.'s wife was charged today with a misdemeanor drug possession count stemming from the couple's arrest last month in West Hollywood.

Tameka Dianne Cottle, 35, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Beverly Hills courthouse, according to Jane Robison of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

The criminal complaint charges Cottle with a single count of possession of Ecstasy.

Accused of kidnapping

LOS ANGELES - Females who may have been victimized by a Hawthorne man suspected of abducting girls and turning them into prostitutes were asked today to contact police.

Leroy Bragg, 34, pleaded not guilty Thursday to human trafficking and other charges.

He is accused of kidnapping a 14-year-old Upland girl a few days ago, and is also suspected of other abductions, said Jane Robison of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
