New study finds that African Americans have a voracious appetite for entertainment

NEW YORK, N.Y.—BET Networks unveiled a new report that challenges the Hollywood mindset that African Americans only support Black movies and outlines the $6.3 billion buying power of this demographic. According to REEL FACTS: A Movie Goer Consumption Study on average, 81% of the movies seen by African Americans do not prominently feature an African American cast, storyline or lead Black star. The study provides an in-depth understanding of African American movie goers and their consumption patterns versus general market movie goers.

Story behind the story

Hollywood by Choice

“Chain Letter” is opening this week, and when I saw the advertisement a chill went up my spine.

Why?

Because I used to hate chain letters, when I received them in the mail back in the day. And now they’ve been replaced with e-mails and text messages calling down hell upon you, if you don’t send them on.

Now it seems this latest flick has skillfully mixed new media with an old fear.

Brace yourself

Hollywood, CA -- Brace yourself. That’s right, this is one of those disturbing movies that leave you scared and concerned for your mortal soul, especially if you believe that in spite of some of the nasty things you’ve done, it still doesn’t qualify you to burn in hell.

“Drag Me to Hell” is one of those nasty movies that will have you cursing all the way through the film. Its shock and gross values are off the hook. And, is it loud?! If you’re not careful you’ll lose your cool and scream before you catch yourself.

When evil has no limits

In our everyday world of corruption, senseless murder, and misdeeds it’s a wonder horror movies can still scare us to a degree. All we have to do is look at the local news and know that there are some mean, dangerous, crazy people in this life.

Across Black America

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
