Reality television is now commonplace on television today. This type of programming is usually dominated by people acting badly, generally for the sake of the camera.  The meaner, or more outrageous you are, the more popular. Reality TV opens the door to our dirty little habits which should make some sigh with relief, because now they know they are not the only ones in the world with this or that particular problem and if they want it, there is help.

It’s time to laugh. Summer is in full swing, get out of the heat and laugh to your hearts content. Why not start with Jamie Foxx and “Horrible Bosses.”

What do champions do when they discover that things are not going as planned or hoped? They regroup and come out fighting. Oprah Winfrey is just that kind of champion.

Winfrey has acknowledged that launching her own cable channel has been more difficult than she expected. And she plans to devote herself to overhauling OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, and spending more time in Los Angeles where the headquarters of OWN is located.

Picture this; everything is going on as normal. The sun rises and sets, children’s laughter is common place and somebody’s music is way too loud. Then suddenly life changes in a heartbeat.

No, I’m not talking about a hopeful summer blockbuster movie, I’m outlining TNT’s newest series “Falling Skies” from executive producer Steven Spielberg, along with DreamWorks Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank, Graham Yost (“Justified,” “The Pacific”) and screenwriter Robert Rodat.

Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett (“What’s Love Got to do With It”) hits the big screen with a meaty role in the highly anticipated film the "Green Lantern.”

Bassett stars as Dr. Amanda Waller, an enigmatic government scientist determined to uncover the truth about some strange “visitors.”

If you can recall, another iconic actress, Pam Grier also starred as Amanda Waller in the television series “Smallville.” In this series, Amanda is the ruthless head of the agency Checkmate.

Across Black America

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
