Both seek equality and protection

Congresswoman Maxine Waters was the keynote speaker at a recent forum designed to help Black and other non-White businesses, as well as those run by women, gain greater access to major banks and brokers to help sustain and establish their corporations.

“Since the recession really took hold in December 2007,” the congresswoman explained, “about 2.3 million homes have been repossessed by banks. Currently, about one in 10 American households, with a mortgage, is at risk of foreclosure.”

The Elizabeth Warren issue and why we should care

On the surface, this really does not look like an issue Black folk or Latinos should be bothered with. Another Harvard candidate for an Obama administration job, and one that is not even at the Supreme Court, or Cabinet level just does not raise the ire or the emotional heat for many of those still looking for new employment, mortgage deliverance and/or courtroom leniency.

This is a Wall Street thing, isn’t it?

President Obama: “The worst president ever” Are you kidding me?

The hyperbole around election time has reached a fever pitch as Republican candidates for the mid-term elections focus on attacking the source of the Democratic Party revival. Aiming at the low poll numbers of President Barack Obama, ideologues are now trying to frame  the Obama presidency as change the country can no longer afford.

Companies remain slow to hire

Many United Sates companies and businesses displayed their lack of confidence about hiring for the third consecutive month in July, giving indications that the nation’s economy will continue to grow slowly for the rest of the year. As a result the unemployment rate held steady at 9.5 percent.

Private employers added a net total of 71,000 jobs last month, which is well below the 200,000 or more jobs needed each month to reduce the unemployment rate.

Republicans blast bill as union “handout”

President Barack Obama recently signed a $26 million measure into law to help eliminate teacher layoffs. Republican leaders have criticized the bill as a “union giveaway” that will stifle prospects for a long-term economic recovery. Democrats, however, claim the bill is necessary to avoid a new recession.

The House gave its final approval to the bill, which had already passed the Senate by a 61-39 vote.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
