WESTMINSTER, Calif.—A Garden Grove woman accused of drugging her estranged husband, slicing off his penis and discarding it in the garbage disposal is scheduled to be arraigned today on charges of torture and aggravated mayhem.

Catherine Kieu, 48, also faces sentencing enhancement allegations of inflicting great bodily harm and use of a dangerous or deadly weapon and could be sentenced to life in prison without parole if convicted, according to prosecutors.

GARDEN GROVE, Calif.—A woman was in custody today for allegedly poisoning her estranged husband and cutting off his penis at his Garden Grove home.

The crime occurred about 9 p.m. Monday in the 14000 block of Flower Street, said Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale.

Catherine Kieu Becker, 48, was booked for aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, administering a drug with intent to commit a felony, poisoning, and spousal abuse. She was being held at the Orange County Jail.

Petty theft, attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Four teenagers and a 20-year-old were arrested in a series of search warrant services at six locations today, all from a tagger gang known as "AI,'' which stands for "Always Intoxicated'' or "Artistic Illusions,'' authorities said.

The warrants were served around 7 a.m. in the downtown Los Angeles area by the sheriff's Transit Services Bureau, said Sgt. Augie Pando.

Woman arrested on suspicion of stabbing her ex-boyfriend

YORBA LINDA - A 47-year-old Yorba Linda woman was arrested on suspicion of stabbing her 48-year-old ex-boyfriend and roommate with an ice pick in a church parking lot, Brea police reported.

The victim was leaving a meeting at Messiah Lutheran Church at 4861 Liverpool St. in Yorba Linda about 9:40 p.m. Monday when he was attacked from behind in his 2006 Mercedes-Benz convertible, said Sgt. Bill Smyser of the Brea police department.

His ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth Cuevas Villanueva, was in the backseat waiting for him, Smyser said.

San Diego college students and volunteers will carry out their sixth home restoration project on Wednesday, July 10 through Sunday, July 14. as part of the “Healing our Heroes’ Homes” (H3) program created by the nonprofit Embrace. The five-day effort will take place at the home of medically retired Marine Corps Capt. Sarah Bettencourt. Bettencourt served with many different units across the country during the Global War on Terrorism and developed a rare neurological disorder in 2008. With a focus to restore the homes of disabled veteran homeowners, H3 falls in line with Embrace’s mission to mobilize college-student volunteers and community members to serve less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities. The project for the Bettencourts’ home includes kitchen and bathroom remodeling, building ADA-compliant disability ramps, widening their driveway to ADA standards, widening doorways and landscaping.

The 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will showcase its five-year community research project on African American identity with the program “The Will to Adorn: African American Diversity, Style, and Identity.” This multicity collaboration examines the history and culture of the aesthetics of African Americans. The festival will be held June 26-30 and July 3-7, outdoors on the National Mall between Seventh and 14th streets. “Whether we realize it or not, we are all dress artists. The way we compose our look is a creative expression of our ideas about who we are and who we aspire to be,” said Diana N’Diaye, program curator. “This program explores the diversity of African American traditions of style, but also teaches young people the importance of documenting their own culture and saving that information for themselves and future generations.”
