Topping-off ceremony brings world-renowned cancer care closer to local residents

A milestone in the construction of a community cancer clinic brought a giant leap in treatment options to residents of the Antelope Valley who are battling cancer. City of Hope, Antelope Valley Hospital, and G. L. Bruno Associates Inc. recently celebrated the completion of the internal structure of City of Hope | Antelope Valley with a “topping off” ceremony.

Fire dispatcher helps via cellphone

LAKE LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Noah couldn’t wait to make his grand entrance at a hospital, like most babies. His father delivered him inside the family car en route to Antelope Valley Hospital, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s lieutenant said.

Deputies responded to 15th Street and Avenue M, in Lake Los Angeles about 11 p.m. Sunday to assist Los Angeles County firefighters after Noah’s father delivered the boy, Lt. Richard Daniels of the sheriff’s Lancaster Station said.

Will serve four-year term

The Antelope Valley Healthcare District consist of Antelope Valley Hospital (AVH), which is a non-designated public hospital run by a six-member board of directors. They are elected to four-year staggered terms, and in this election three of the six seats are up for grabs.

Six people, including incumbents Abdallah S. Farrukh, MD, a neurosurgeon, nurse-practitioner Berna Mayer and plastic surgeon John J, Manning.

Darrell Logan

PALMDALE, Calif.—An armed man who was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Palmdale was identified today as 32-year-old Darrell Logan, authorities announced.

Deputies responded to the 3100 block of Heather Avenue at 11:48 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call reporting gunfire at a home, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Benjamin Grubb said.

Deputies ordered the suspect to come out of the garage, but he refused.

Deputies entered the the garage and opened fire when they encountered the armed suspect, Grubb said.

Give Life. The city of Lancaster is asking, residents to donate blood at the Antelope Valley Hospital, 8am to 1pm. For those in the Palmdale area, American Red Cross is also taking donors today from 1 to 7 pm.

Here’s a look at African American people and issues making headlines throughout the country.

California
San Diego college students and volunteers will carry out their sixth home restoration project on Wednesday, July 10 through Sunday, July 14. as part of the “Healing our Heroes’ Homes” (H3) program created by the nonprofit Embrace. The five-day effort will take place at the home of medically retired Marine Corps Capt. Sarah Bettencourt. Bettencourt served with many different units across the country during the Global War on Terrorism and developed a rare neurological disorder in 2008. With a focus to restore the homes of disabled veteran homeowners, H3 falls in line with Embrace’s mission to mobilize college-student volunteers and community members to serve less fortunate members of civilian and veteran communities. The project for the Bettencourts’ home includes kitchen and bathroom remodeling, building ADA-compliant disability ramps, widening their driveway to ADA standards, widening doorways and landscaping.
 
District of Columbia
The 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will showcase its five-year community research project on African American identity with the program “The Will to Adorn: African American Diversity, Style, and Identity.” This multicity collaboration examines the history and culture of the aesthetics of African Americans. The festival will be held June 26-30 and July 3-7, outdoors on the National Mall between Seventh and 14th streets. “Whether we realize it or not, we are all dress artists. The way we compose our look is a creative expression of our ideas about who we are and who we aspire to be,” said Diana N’Diaye, program curator. “This program explores the diversity of African American traditions of style, but also teaches young people the importance of documenting their own culture and saving that information for themselves and future generations.”
