Hallie Mossett was a national team member with Gabrielle Douglas

Local gymnast, Hallie Mossett, recently signed a national letter of intent to join the six-time NCAA National Championship UCLA Gymnastics team under the direction of Coach Valorie Kondos-Field.

Hallie, 17, is a senior at Vistamar School in El Segundo, and currently resides in Redondo Beach. She has been a gymnast since the age of 5, and the scholar-athlete has amassed quite an impressive list of gymnastics accomplishments.

He cites health, but other problems loom

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who has been on a lengthy medical leave from Congress because of bipolar disorder while also facing separate federal investigations, resigned from Congress Wednesday, citing health problems.

“The constituents of the (2nd) District deserve a full-time legislator in Washington, something I cannot be for the foreseeable future. My health issues and treatment regimen have become incompatible with the House of Representatives,” Jackson wrote.

Brea police say no evidence of a hate crimes

YORBA LINDA, Calif.—A Black family of four, led by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy and Inglewood police officer, said they were chased out of Yorba Linda because of repeated acts of racism, prompting the Orange County Human Relations Commission today to pledge new outreach efforts to Blacks in the county.

Shot by police

INGLEWOOD, Calif.—A 22-year-old man wounded by police after allegedly threatening a handyman with a gun at an Inglewood apartment building was in custody today following a two-hour standoff.

Police went to the building in the 500 block of Arbor Vitae Street near Osage Avenue around 11 a.m. Tuesday in response to a call reporting that a man had brandished a firearm, said Inglewood police Lt. Neal Cochran.

Government, banks, post office

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Government offices, courts, schools, libraries, banks and post offices will be closed tomorrow in observance of Thanksgiving.

There will be no trash collection by city crews in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Sanitation.

Residents whose trash is normally collected on Thursday will have it picked up Friday. Friday trash collection will be pushed to Saturday.

Metro buses, trains and subways will be on a Sunday schedule.

Alabama
Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will address the annual African American Business Council luncheon on June 28. Hrabowski, who is chairman of President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Education Excellence for African Americans, has a national reputation for his work studying the performance of minority students in math and science. Hrabowski, named one of the 10 best college presidents in the country by Time magazine, was a child leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham in the 1960s.
 

Arkansas
The Liberty Counsel filed a motion and a brief in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas seeking to intervene on behalf of a Concepts of Life crisis pregnancy center to defend against a suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Reproductive Rights. The groups seek to impose a permanent injunction before the Human Heartbeat Protection Act goes into effect July 18. Liberty Counsel also filed a brief opposing the ACLU’s request for an injunction. The “Heartbeat” bill states that when a woman seeks an abortion at or after the 12th week, doctors must test for a fetal heartbeat before an abortion is performed and inform the pregnant mother that the child in her womb has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is detected, a woman cannot have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest, and if a mother’s life is in danger. “As we promised when the legislation was introduced, Liberty Counsel will defend this law without reservation for the people of Arkansas, born and pre-born,” said Matt Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “No right is more foundational than the right to life. Without life, all other rights are irrelevant,” concluded Staver.
