Celebrity Chef Curtis Aikens will bring his Building A Better Community program to the Compton Youth Activities League (YAL) March 24 from 4-6 p.m. at 700 N. Alameda St. in Compton.
The event will kick off a weekly program that teaches youth ages 7-17 the abc’s of nutrition, as well as the economics of growing and selling food, gardening, and cooking. Young people will attend the free program from 3-7 p.m. once a week, and in the proceess will take field trips, learn problem solving, leadership, cooperation and the importance of giving back. Ulimately the program will “grow the kids” as it teaches participants how to harvest food of their own. The program will be managed by Chef Aikens and Stuart Farber, Ph.D., an psychologist who specializes in working grassroots organizations. Contact the Compton YAL at (310) 668-4203.
