The Antelope Valley College Umoja Community and the Office of Black Student Development, UC Santa Barbara invites students, faculty, staff, and our community to join us Friday, June 18th from 9 AM – 11 AM for a special Juneteenth Celebration.
Organizers said this year’s celebration will be virtual. The event will feature guest speakers, surprise performances, and our Co-Sponsors: President of the Sun Village Park Association Mr. James Brooks, and the University of California, Santa Barbara Director of the Office of Black Student Development Mr. Elroy Pinks.
The event will be a great way to enjoy history, music, spoken word, community fellowship, and fun!
What is Juneteenth? Although slavery was officially abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, not all enslaved Africans were notified of their freedom. Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) marks the day that the last group of enslaved Africans received word that enslavement had legally ended. This group of enslaved Africans were found in Galveston, Texas. Texas was the first state to have a recognized celebration in 1980 and today 45 states recognize Juneteenth.
