Funeral services are pending in celebration of Sandra Black Walker, who passed away May 5, following a long illness. Walker, wife of Rev. Jewett L. Walker Jr., president of 100 Black Men of Los Angeles, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Walker’s family moved to California in 1952 and she attended Enterprise Junior High School in Compton and Compton High School. She later attended UC Santa Barbara, receiving a B.A. with Honors in history. After attending UCLA and receiving her Elementary Teaching Credential, Walker began working at Charles Drew Head Start, first as a teacher and later as a Child Development Supervisor.

In 1978, Walker received a Master’s Degree in Education and a Reading Specialist Credential from California State University Dominguez Hills, where she later obtained her Administrative Credential. Walker also earned a Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Ministerial Training Institute. For 33 years, Walker had a career with the Inglewood Unified School District.

The Walkers were married in 1997 and joined True Vine Baptist Church in Inglewood, where Jewett Walker served as an associate minister and Sandra Walker taught Sunday School and served as a deaconess. In December 2013, her husband accepted a call to pastor at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral services will include a small private gathering of family at Holy Cross
