Rev. Al Sharpton and Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, are set to testify today (Sept. 19) in front of the House Judiciary Committee in an oversight hearing on policing practices, reports NBC News.

The NYPD officer, Daniel Pantaleo, who allegedly killed Garner after putting the Staten Island father in an illegal choke hold five years ago was recently fired from the force. Garner’s last words, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement, protesting against police misconduct.

The hearing was set up after National Action Network (NAN) and Carr campaigned for Congressional action on police misconduct. It’s the first hearing on the issue in the wake of recent misconduct cases throughout the country that led to the deaths of Garner, Philando Castile and others. The hearing will be streamed live and can be watched by going to http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVvv3JRCVOA16ovogDUM4hA
