Los Angeles’ sixth Bridge Home emergency shelter for the homeless opened this week in the Hyde Park area with enough space for 100 people.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joined City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson on a tour of the Bridge Home site, which is located at 5965 St. Andrews Place and nicknamed “The Bread Yard” for its proximity to a local business. It is the first such shelter to open in South Los Angeles.

“Housing is a human right, and we need to do everything possible to provide shelter as well as the requisite resources residents require to live stable lives,” Harris-Dawson said. “This Bridge Home is the latest effort to support homeless residents and the communities that house them. I’m committed to using every tool and tactic available to solve this crisis.”

The Bread Yard location will help homeless people transition from the streets into permanent supportive housing by providing social services.

The shelter is equipped to serve 63 men and 37 women who are currently sleeping on the street or in their cars in South Los Angeles. It includes a community room, kitchen, garden and dog park as well as space for pets. The service provider HOPICS will offer mental health, substance abuse and job training resources on site for every resident.

“The St. Andrews Bridge Home in City Council District 8 is inspiring because it allows us to help restore dignity to men and women living on the streets,” Special Service for Groups/HOPICS director Veronica Lewis said. “HOPICS is proud to partner with the city to restore hope to one person at a time and address this humanitarian crisis in the city of Los Angels.”

Another Bridge Home site was scheduled to open this week—The Gardner Street Women’s Bridge Housing Center, located at 1403 N. Gardner St., in the Hollywood area.
