The public is invited to view a free art exhibit created by the students of the Legacy Commons for Active Seniors Mixed Media Art Class. It is on display now through April 30.

“In visual art, mixed media is an artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed,” said Annie Wallack, volunteer art instructor. “Assemblages and collages are two common examples of art using different media that will make use of different materials including cloth, paper and /or wood.”

The Mixed Media Art Class meets from 1 to 3 p.m. every Monday and is have a delightful  time creating art projects.

“This class rocks,” said class member Cathy Richman. Classmate Cheryl Huff concurs. “Using odds and ends from around the house interested me,” she said. “ Come and play at this class.”

Wallack is no stranger to art. She has a degree in fine arts from Humboldt State University and has taught art at UC Riverside and Riverside City College. She is also a creative arts counselor.

Although Wallach had been working on and off in mixed media  since the 1990’s, she was reintroduced to the medium ironically by Janet Briggs, a former Legacy Commons volunteer who taught a similar class. After Briggs moved out of the area two years ago, Wallach took over the class and has led it ever since.

The class is free and open to anyone 55 and older. “No art experience required,” Wallach said, “just a willingness to have fun and express yourself through mixed media art, words and images.”

Legacy Commons is located at 930 East Avenue Q-9, and is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.
