Los Angeles Urban League’s new Construction Career Academy seeks to prepare students for union apprenticeships by focusing on passing the written and oral exams for entry into a trade union.

The training sessions will run for eight weeks and include 64 hours of instruction covering topics such as mathematics, interview techniques, workplace safety protocols, and skills to help candidates stay on the job and thrive in their new career.

“This program offers a unique entry point for people looking to get into a construction trade,” said Brian Williams, vice president and COO of Los Angeles Urban League. “Participants can learn a lot in a short amount of time and feel confident when they take their union entrance exams.”

The classes will be led by industry veterans James T. Mitchell and Amare El Jamii. Mitchell has more than 30 years of experience in industrial training and management and has a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee.  El Jamii has worked in manufacturing for more than a decade and has experience in nonprofit start-up and management. He holds degrees in statistics and applied mathematics from Norco College and UCLA, respectively.

The Construction Career Academy’s inaugural session starts June 15 and is now accepting applications at https://laul.org/cca. Classes will be held Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the Los Angeles Urban League located at 4401 Crenshaw Blvd. Suite 201, in South Los Angeles.
