Authorities this week identified a man who was fatally shot by a motorist he was allegedly trying to rob at gunpoint in South Los Angeles.

Ronald Elam, 18, of Los Angeles died at the shooting scene about 4:10 a.m. July 21 in the 7300 block of South Normandie Avenue, according to the coroner’s office and the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 25-year-old man was sitting in his vehicle when Elam got in and tried to rob him at gunpoint, said Officer Norma Eisenman of the LAPD’s Media Relations Section.

The motorist, whose name was withheld, managed to disarm Elam and shot him, Eisenman said. Police detained the man for questioning, and the investigation was continuing, she said.
