It’s a new record for the Oscars, with seven Black men and women earning the coveted statue, in addition to Black films doing well in certain categories. “Black Panther” had three wins, one for Best Original Score and the other two for design categories. And of course, “Green Book,” took him the Best Picture trophy.

Regina King won for Best Supporting Actress in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of pianist Don Shirley in “Green Book.” This was Ali’s second Oscar, as he won in the same category in 2017 for “Moonlight.” Spike Lee’s win was historical as well, as it was his first Oscar… Best Adapted Screenplay for “Blackkklansman.” Ruth E. Carter won for Best Costume Design for “Black Panther” (first Black woman to win in that category), joined by Hannah Beachler for Best Achievement in Production Design, also for “Black Panther” and also the first Black person to win in that category. An Oscar went to Peter Ramsey for Best Animated Film for “Spiderman: Into the Spider Verse.”
