The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $9.6 million for new and expansion projects to the Los Angeles Continuum of Care (LA CoC). In addition to earlier renewal awards, the LA CoC has received nearly $124 million from HUD in the last three weeks. The figure represents the largest HUD Award the LA CoC has ever received, and an increase of $15 million compared to the total amount awarded last year.
The latest funds will pay for an additional 228 permanent supportive housing (PSH) beds, as well as 177 new slots for survivors of domestic violence in rapid re-housing, 15 beds for domestic violence survivors in transitional housing facilities, and $1 million in domestic violence supportive services. These new funds will support critical alignment work between the homeless service delivery system and the domestic violence service provider network, enabling survivors to safely move into permanent housing. The award also includes $1.25 million in planning funds for the LA CoC.
“This money will enable providers to expand services to traditionally underserved populations,” said Peter Lynn, executive director of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). “In addition to the PSH units, this award enables us to enhance our innovative efforts to help domestic violence survivors experiencing homelessness in our community.”
The LA CoC includes all cities in Los Angeles County except Glendale, Long Beach, and Pasadena. Each year, HUD announces a competitive Notice of Funding Availability for the CoC program nationally. As the LA CoC’s Collaborative Applicant, LAHSA prepares and submits the funding application on behalf of the LA CoC.
