The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) is pleased to announce the election of Shirley N. Weber (District 79) as the incoming chairperson of the California Legislative Black Caucus.
Assemblymember Weber has been a champion for education and civil rights. This year, Weber authored two caucus priority bills in AB 2635 regarding properly funding underperforming students, and AB 931 which seeks to improve public safety through changing law enforcement’s use of force policies.
“Because of her leadership and passion for the African American community, we are honored to have Dr. Weber serve as the new Black Caucus Chair,” said Assemblymember Chris Holden (District 41), the CLBC’s current chair. “She has proven time and time again that she is willing to take on the biggest issues, serving as a David to a world of Goliaths.”
Weber will be sworn in as chairperson on Dec. 3.
“I’m honored that my colleagues have entrusted me with the Chair of the CLBC. We’ve had a wonderfully successful two years under the guidance of Mr. Holden, and I hope to continue that success into my tenure,” Weber said. “The CLBC has a 50-year tradition of excellence serving the African American community. I hope to contribute to that tradition by shedding light on issues important to our community and advancing policies that benefit all communities.”
The executive board will also include: Sen. Steven Bradford, vice chair (District 35); Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, secretary (District 54); and Assemblyman Jim Cooper, treasurer (District 9).
