Call it the Year of the Woman, and more specifically, the Year of the Black Woman. This year more than ever in America history, woman and especially Black women are making it known they are here and ready to serve a country that has underserved them. Our Weekly has been keeping a watch on several candidates, such as Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who is on the verge of becoming the state’s first Black and first female governor. She is just one example and this week in Massachusetts it is happening as well. Ayanna Pressley, a Black woman, scored what many consider a stunning upset as she beat out 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, putting herself in position to become the first Black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress. According to the New York Times, Pressley’s campaign included a message that seemed to strike a cord with many voters, in the age of Trump, “Change can’t wait.” And to add to that campaign theme, during her acceptance speech Tuesday night, Pressley told supporters, “It seems like change is on the way.” Capuano conceded with just 13 percent of the votes in, saying: “I’m sorry it didn’t work out, but this is life, and this is O.K. America’s going to be O.K. Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that Massachusetts will be well served.” It’s pretty much Pressley’s seat, as there is not Republican on the ballot in November. It’s interesting to note that this district in Boston was once represented by John F. Kennedy.
