The sheriff’s bomb squad made made safe a suspicious item that was found hanging from a car parked outside an elementary school, with the surrounding block evacuated.
The item, which police said was not explosive, was rendered safe about 4:30 a.m. Monday, according to reports from the scene.
A woman called Inglewood police at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 25 to say there was a suspicious car parked in the 700 block of West Beach Avenue, police Lt. Neal Cochran said. “It’s got wires dangling from it,’’ he said.
A bomb-sniffing dog was brought to the scene and “alerted’’ while sniffing the 2004 Acura sedan, Cochran said.
Beach Avenue was evacuated between Hyde Park Boulevard and Venice Way, he said.
“We don’t know who left it but they parked it right outside of a school,’’ Cochran said. He identified the school as Highland Elementary.
Cochran said a preliminary examination of the item by bomb squad personnel indicated that the item was a “legitimate IED’’ — or improvised explosive device.
However, the bomb squad later determined that the item, consisting of gasoline pumps with wires and batteries, was not an explosive device and could not cause damage or injury, police said.
