First Black woman elected to Congress in Connecticut

Some political history was made in Connecticut on Tuesday night. with former National Teacher of the Year Jahana Hayes being elected as the first African-American woman from Connecticut to be elected to Congress. Hayes prevailed in the 5th Congressional District race, winning 56 percent of the vote. Hayes told supporters that she is looking forward to making a difference in Washington. “People have said to me ‘she doesn’t have what it takes. She’s not built for this.’ Not only am I built for this, I’m Brass City built for it,” she stated. “Today, today, today, today, Connecticut. Today, we made history by sending me to Congress.” The 5th District covers northern New Haven County, including the cities of Waterbury and Meriden, part of Hartford County, much of Litchfield County and northern Fairfield County.
