The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved funding for security guards to be posted around the clock at county toilets to be installed near high-need homeless encampments, including one such enclave in East Pearblossom.
Supervisor Hilda Solis has championed portable toilets with handwashing stations.
“Unfortunately, those experiencing homelessness have been disproportionately impacted by the Hepatitis A outbreak,” Solis said.
“However, the county is responding quickly to combat this outbreak. Having an area to wash your hands is a human rights issue, and today we are expanding our ability to ensure that our at-risk communities have access to this basic human need in a safe environment.”
Public hygiene facilities are slated for four sites, including West Carson, Whittier Narrows Park in El Monte, and along the Los Angeles River near the Century (105) Freeway.
The money covers security for up to six months.
