When rapper Meek Mill violated his probation and was sent to prison last year, a lot of people protested the harsh sentence the judge handed down. Even the Washington Post carried a story: “Why is Meek Mill still in prison?” According to the Associated Press, Kathy Williams says it’s time that the district attorney “step in” and aid her son. The comments were made by Williams during a news conference before the beginning of a criminal justice panel at the University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday (March 13). The mother of the rapper criticizes her son’s sentence, which was two to four years when he was found guilty of violating the terms of his probation on gun and drug charges from nearly a decade ago. In December, lawyers tried to get Miil, who is 30, released on bail but that request was denied. Mill’s mom and his attorneys have appealed to District Attorney Larry Krasner intervene in the case and have Mill released. When Mill was sentenced for violating a probation that has lasted several years, Judge Genece Brinkley said he was “a danger to the community.” Currently, Mill is being held in a medium security prison in Chester, PA. He will be eligible for parole in less than two years.
