Summertime means baseball, and while the big boys battle it out in Major League Baseball, the future stars of tomorrow are also playing in the dirt in the summer heat. And one young team in the Distict (as they call the Washington, D.C. area) is proud to say they are champions. Earlier this week, the Mamie Johnson Little League beat Capitol Hill to claim the District’s Little League championship in a tournament that has been a staple there for more than 30 years. Now the Mamie Johnson team will head to Bristol, Connecticut to compete in the Little League World Series. And adds the Washington Post, this is the first all African American team to win this tournament. “My heart, it’s never been full than it was last night,” Charlie Sperduto, the director of baseball and softball programs at the National Youth Baseball Academy told the Post. The kids are 11- and 12-year-olds.
