Southern California Gas Co. began work earlier this week on a roughly $17 million pipeline modernization project along West 190th Street near the Harbor (110) Freeway in the Harbor Gateway area.

The half-mile stretch of pipeline is set to be replaced between Vermont Avenue and Figueroa Street, along the Los Angeles-Carson border.

The work is scheduled to be completed in May as part of SoCalGas’ Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan, a program that identifies various high- pressure pipeline sections throughout the utility’s system and schedules them to be pressure-tested and/or replaced.

“Upgrading our pipeline system helps ensure we can continue to reliably provide natural gas to homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and power plants in Los Angeles,” said Rick Phillips, senior director of SoCalGas’ Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan. “Our customers in this region prefer to use natural gas for heat and hot water because it’s more reliable and affordable than any alternative.”

Due to the pipeline work, eastbound and westbound traffic on West 190th Street is reduced to one lane in each direction from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays through the completion of the project. Eastbound and westbound traffic on West 190th Street between South Vermont Avenue and South Figueroa Street will not be able to make left turns for approximately a half-mile due to construction work in the middle lane, but westbound traffic will still be able to turn left or right onto Vermont Avenue, and eastbound traffic will still be able to turn left or right on South Figueroa Street.

The Harbor Freeway southbound off-ramp at 190th Street will be closed tomorrow and Saturday, and West 190th Street between South Vermont Avenue and South Figueroa Street will be closed to traffic from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday.
