One dead in Lancaster robbery

A 61-year-old man was shot dead today in Lancaster during a robbery and two suspects believed to be involved in the killing were still at large, sheriff’s officials said.

The shooting took place about 8:30 a.m. Feb. 19 in the 44400 block of Division Street, where the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Deputy Joana Warren of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Lancaster deputies were sent to the scene in response to a “gunshot victim” call, Deputy Guillermina Saldana said.

The victim was working as a cashier in a convenience store where the robbery took place. The cashier was robbed by two men, one of whom had a handgun and fired a number of times at the victim, hitting him once in the chest, Saldana said.

The victim died at the scene, Saldana continued. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The store where the robbery occurred was believed to be a drive-thru dairy, according to the sheriff’s department.

The two suspects fled the scene on foot. There’s no word yet regarding what the robbers stole from the store.
