Numerous news sources out of South Florida are reporting that a Black student at the Parkland high school moved to shield classmates during a former student’s shooting rampage last week, where 17 students and staff were killed. The young hero – Anthony Borges – was severely wounded but is recovering. The 15-year-old is in stable condition after surgery from gun shots to his back and his legs. “He’s my hero,” said his father, Royer Borges. “I only ask that people pray for him.” Scott Israel, Broward County Sheriff, paid a visit to the young man on Sunday, posting a photo of their encounter on Facebook. The post that accompanied the photo indicated that Borges has a long “road to recovery ahead” with more surgeries in his future. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the kid’s family with medical expenses and it’s already raised nearly $100,000. According to witnesses, Borges probably saved several of this classmates’ lives when he shielded them from the gunman’s rampage in the halls of the high school. “None of us knew what to do. So he took the initiative to just save other classmates,” said fellow student Carlos Rodriguez on “Good Morning America.” After the officer posted the photo, social media reacted, calling the teen a true hero and offering prayers and well wishes.
