A former court services assistant accused of stealing more than $1,500 in traffic fines was arraigned this week in a downtown courtroom.

Adrian Evette Washington, 44, was charged Jan. 16 with one felony count of misappropriating public money and arrested last Thursday, according to the District Attorney’s Office and sheriff’s jail records.

Prosecutors said Washington worked as a court services assistant at the Compton courthouse in 2014 and handled the payment of ticket fines. She is accused of keeping a portion of payments from about a dozen customers that totaled $1,567.

Prosecutors are recommending bail be set at $25,000. Washington faces up to four years in state prison if convicted as charged.
