Authorities this week released the name of a 38-year-old man who investigators say was fatally shot by a woman while he was fighting with another man in Palmdale.

Ruben Flores was shot late in the evening Aug. 25 and died at a hospital, according to the coroner’s office and sheriff’s officials.

Palmdale residents Jessica Cortez, 24, and Alec Nelson, 28, were both arrested on suspicion of murder, Deputy Wally Bracks said, with bail set at $2 million.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives alleged that Cortez told them she feared Flores was inflicting serious injuries on Nelson when she opened fire outside a residence in the 36500 block of Rozalee Drive about 11:15 p.m.

The three were described as acquaintances by the sheriff’s department, which asked anyone with information about what happened to call the Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Tipsters also can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8847.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the shooting scene, Bracks said.
