Singer Janelle Monae comes out as ‘queer Black woman’ as ‘Dirty Computer’ is released

She’s one of the few young singer of today who has pretty much stayed off the reality shows and built her reputation as a great talent. Monae has also stretched her wings and been featured in the award-winning films “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight.” This week, the Grammy-nominated singer told Rolling Stone that she has been in relationships with men… and women, and called herself a “queer Black woman in America.” The announcement of her sexuality coincides with the release of her third album, called “Dirty Computer.” It makes one wonder if the Rolling Stone revelation and the new album release were timed together. According to the Rolling Stone interview, the new album “is a reaction to the sting of what it means to hear people in my family say, ‘All gay people are going to hell’.” Monae says she wants to inspire young people. “I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you. This album is for you. Be proud.”
