A former Los Angeles County deputy probation officer pleaded guilty this week to assault under the color of authority for inappropriately touching two teenage girls at a juvenile camp in Santa Clarita.
Oscar David Calderon Jr., 33, was immediately sentenced to 364 days in county jail and ordered to serve five years on probation following his plea to the two felony counts, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Calderon—who worked as a deputy probation officer for about nine years but has since resigned—worked at Camp Scudder beginning in 2014, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
He was initially charged in January with charges involving four teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 18, but the counts involving two of the girls were dismissed as a result of his plea.
Less than two months after the case was filed against Calderon, three other men who had worked for the Los Angeles County Probation Department—Deputy Probation Officers Timothy Boundy and Carlos Portillo and Supervising Deputy Probation Officer Sergio Cano—were charged in a separate assault case involving male inmates at the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar.
Chief Probation Officer Terri McDonald said in March that two of the three men charged are no longer employed by the department and the other was on leave, but probation officials refused to specify then which employee was on leave and which two were no longer with the department.
Boundy is charged with three counts of assault under color of authority, while Portillo is charged with two counts of assault under color of authority. Cano is charged with one count of assault under color of authority.
Portillo is accused of hitting a teen repeatedly on April 25, 2016, while Boundy allegedly held the boy on the ground and Cano allegedly watched.
Authorities said the boy suffered moderate injuries in the assault, which was caught on videotape.
The investigation led to additional allegations that Portillo and Boundy assaulted another teen after he tried to leave his room on Feb. 8, 2016.
Boundy is also accused of grabbing a teen on Oct. 8, 2015, throwing him to the ground and hitting him.
Portillo and Cano are due back in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Oct. 25, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to require them to stand trial.
