Free Thanksgiving meals offered for those in need

While most of us are planning menus and getting excited about the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday that we will likely be spending with friends and family, many individuals struggle to put a meal on the table everyday, and many others are homeless or simply alone. For those individuals who are in need, below is a list of locations in South L.A. where guests can get a free Thanksgiving meal and spend time with other members of their community.

The Fred Jordan Mission expects to serve turkey dinners to more than 2,000 homeless men, women and children on Skid Row Thursday. The mission is making some 3,000 pounds of turkey, 80 gallons of gravy, hundreds of pounds of green beans, yams and plenty of pumpkin pie. The meal starts at 10:00 a.m. http://www.fjm.org/

St. Brigid Catholic Church, 5214 S. Western Ave. will feature a free Thanksgiving dinner following the 10 a.m. mass. No registration is required. For more information, (323) 292-0781.

The Midnight Mission’s annual Thanksgiving Street Festival is serving Thanksgiving meals on Skid Row. About 200 volunteers are expected to help out. The mission is expecting to serve more than 2,000 people. http://www.midnightmission.org/

The annual Thanksgiving-In-The-Park in Pasadena. The Union Station Homeless Services group will serve meals to the needy at Pasadena’s Central Park from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. http://www.unionstationhs.org/dinners_in_the_park.html

World Vegan Day LA Thanksgiving Potluck Picnic at Rancho Park

Calling itself L.A.’s longest-running single-day vegan tradition, World Vegan Day LA will host a come-one, come-all vegan potluck picnic on Thanksgiving Day. No RSVP necessary; just come with a labeled dish to share and any musical instruments or sports equipment for park play. To find the group, go south on Motor Avenue, make a right into the very first entrance, drive all the way back and park, then walk to the picnic tables across the grass. There will be an “opening circle” at noon, and then the feast will begin. For more info, www.veganday.info

The Laugh Factory in West Hollywood will provide free Thanksgiving meals for the underprivileged, “struggling and/or lonely” comics, actors, writers, directors, others in the entertainment community and anyone who is alone for the holidays. The Westside Thanksgiving Celebration at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium is open to everyone. Guests will enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. The Vision Project and the Westside Thanksgiving Day Dinner Committee will also provide the homeless with flu shots and basic medical care, eye drops, glasses, clothing, blankets and haircuts.
