United Kingdom Initiative on Saturday

Merdies Hayes | 11/15/2017, midnight

A collaborative of local churches on Saturday will conduct the fifth annual Churches United Kingdom Initiative to provide needed resources for the South Los Angeles community.

Spearheaded by Inglewood’s Maranatha Community Church, other congregations will include Christ Ambassadors and Ministerios Fuente de Aqua Viva each pitching in to provide food, clothing, health screenings and notably, spiritual guidance to local residents.

“We conduct this event each year to provide badly needed resources to the community and minister to the soul,” said Rev. Stephen Dyson, pastor of Maranatha Community Church which will host the event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1123 E. Redondo Blvd. (between Florence Avenue and West Boulevard). “We will prepare a hot Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings and also give out food, clothing and other needed items.”

Dyson said the public response has always been positive. The majority of the efforts each year are to distribute food and clothing, but this year will include a dental truck provided by the USC School of Dentistry, nurses from the UCLA School of Medicine, and a number of county health service providers.

“People feel respected when they can have nourishing food, clean clothes and good health,” Dyson said. “There is sometimes a low perception of the community church, so that’s why we work in events like this. We want to meet the needs of the community. We believe one hand can make a difference, but many hands can get the job done. Through our collaborative efforts, we are dedicated to enriching the lives of those in our community.”

Live entertainment will be featured as well.
