Omotayo Adeoye was just 17 when she committed suicide in the Hudson River after leaving school. This week, her mother was awarded a $750,000 settlement from New York City after it was determined a teacher “publicly shamed and humiliated” the young girl. The teen was accused of cheating on a practice test. Omotayo went to the river, handed her belongings to someone and went into the river. But before she went to the river, she had written a note that indicated she had suicidal thoughts after the incident over the test dealing with her German language class. The judge also reprimanded the staff at the school because no one followed protocol when a student appears suicidal and did anything to stop her from leaving the school unattended. In fact, the teen had previously attempted suicide and had other mental health issues.
