The South Los Angeles Wetlands Park at Avalon Boulevard and 54th Street emerged as the winner of a national park-improvement campaign and will receive a $20,000 grant for a native plant restoration project, city officials announced recently.

The park was one of 16 improvement projects selected to receive grant funding through the Meet Me at the Park campaign, which is sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association and The Walt Disney Co.

“The Department of Recreation and Parks is appreciative of the support for our local parks and for the Meet Me At The Park campaign which will provide grant funding to restore the South Los Angeles Wetlands,” said Michael Shull, general manager of the city Department of Recreation and Parks.

“This nature park is a popular destination for community residents to take a stroll, enjoy nature, and take a moment away from the urban environment of the city. The project, which includes native plant restoration and landscaping improvements, will revitalize this park for the community,” he said.

The campaign had 15 designated communities across the country, including Fresno and San Francisco, and the winning parks were selected through public voting. A 16th winning city was selected through a write-in campaign and was awarded to a park in McAllen, Texas.

“Nearly 70,000 people participated in this year’s Meet Me at the Park campaign, a record number, demonstrating a tremendous amount of support and enthusiasm for local parks nationwide,” said Lori Robertson, NRPA director of conservation.

“Many children and families in need will benefit from this campaign, which was made possible by the generosity of The Walt Disney Co. We want to thank them for helping us give back to the communities our members so proudly support,” she said.
