Charles Reese, an international performing artist, educator and cultural architect for public engagement, will host a special screening of the 2017 NAACP-nominated documentary film, “Maya Angelou—And Still I Rise” for the Pasadena City College (PCC) campus community at Westerbeck Recital Hall at Center for The Arts Comple, tonight at 7 p.m.
“Maya Angelou—And Still I Rise” will be followed by an intimate conversation with Dr. Maya Angelou’s grandson Colin A. Johnson, and co-director/producer Rita Coburn Whack along with journalist/author, Rolonda Watts serving as the guest moderator. A brief Q&A immediately follows the conversation. PCC student, Amaris Jacobs will start the evening with a spoken word tribute as it relates to the important role Dr. Angelou’s legacy has on Jacobs’ current work as a young social activist in today’s global world.
Celebrating five years as an educational inter-generational student inspired cultural program series serving the Pasadena City College campus and surrounding communities, the Jackie Robinson Arts and Humanities Lecture Series presents this kick off event screening as part of a three-part series entitled, “Art as Activism: A Digital New Media Dialogue on Race, Politics and The New Civil Rights Movement in America.”
Utilizing the medium of documentary films, the series will bear witness to the most engaging, entertaining and educational new media projects from the 2016-2017 film season—“Maya Angelou—And Still I Rise” (Thursday, March 30); Academy Award nominee, “I Am Not Your Negro” written by James Baldwin (Thursday, April 27); and Academy Award nominee, “13th” by Ava DuVernay (Thursday, May 25). This film as dialogue program event is funded by PCC Student Equity in conjunction with the office of Dr. Robert Bell and the College Diversity Initiative. Free and open to the public.
