Reward offered in holiday hit-run

County officials asked for the public’s help this week—and offered a $20,000 reward—in identifying a driver who killed a teenage girl in Canyon Country the day after Christmas.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger recommended the reward in hopes that it results in new leads for investigators trying to find the motorist responsible for the hit-and-run death of 15-year-old Desiree Renee Lawson.

“With this reward, I hope to encourage the public’s participation in offering detectives any tips or leads that may help them find the suspect responsible for this crime,” Barger said.

The teenager was crossing Sierra Highway, south of Soledad Canyon Road, at about 8:40 p.m. Dec. 26 when she was struck by a car described by witnesses as a gold, tan or a dark- colored four-door sedan with a lowered front end. Investigators said there may be damage to the hood or front end of the car.

The girl, who had five siblings, had been reported missing in September. She had a history of disappearing from her Sylmar home, according to her relatives, who said that before her death, she had called home and promised to return soon.

Barger encouraged anyone with information to call sheriff’s Detective Mark Cramer at (661) 255-1121.
