The ongoing heatwave has compelled the cooling center at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) to remain open through the end of the month.

City officials encourage residents to take proper precautions during intense heat events, therefore the cooling center on the first floor of the facility, located at 665 W. Lancaster Blvd., will operate from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Wednesday, and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. The Lancaster Public Library, 601 W. Lancaster Blvd., also serves as a cooling center and is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Cooling centers are designed to assist persons who do not have air conditioning at home, or those who are looking to reduce their energy bills during the summer months. Other options to cool off include movie theaters, shopping centers, large stores, restaurants, etc.

While the elderly and small children are most susceptible to heat, it is important for everyone to protect themselves from the sun and heat. Antelope Valley residents are urged to put into practice these helpful recommendations:

—Avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest;

—Stay in air conditioned locations during peak hours;

—Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid alcohol, sweetened drinks and caffeine;

—If no air conditioning is available, take a cool shower or bathe in cool water twice a day;

—Check on elderly neighbors and family and friends who may not have air conditioning;

—Never leave a child or infant in an unattended vehicle;

—Do not leave a pet in an unattended vehicle; provide them with plenty of water and shade.
