The cities of Lancaster and Palmdale have scheduled a variety of activities focusing on service to the community in celebration of Martin Luther King Day.
In Lancaster, the 2017 MLK Day of Service will begin tomorrow with a series of volunteer projects. Officials expect more than 1,000 volunteers to complete local service projects throughout the community. Volunteers can register online through the city’s OneLINC volunteer management program. The volunteer assignments are available on a first-come, first-served basis and individuals, families and groups are encouraged to turn out and help spruce up the community and provide assistance where needed.
“Each year, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service inspires residents to do extraordinary things for our community,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “This is a powerful and unifying effort which encourages others to help their neighbors, participate in civic groups, and donate to local charities. All of this ultimately improves our community’s resilience.”
Palmdale conducts a series of “Season of Service” events into the spring months. Kicking things off tomorrow is the annual MLK Day of Service Adopt a Block event, sponsored by Advancing Communities Together. Register at 8:30 a.m. at 38626 9th Street East. Under the theme “Build Up, Build Out and Build Stronger Together,” volunteers will fan out for a community clean up. Lunch will be served, and there will be children’s activities. Look for appearances by the Yahdah Dance Team from Living Praise Christian Center, Renaissance Movement, and Group Folklorico of the Antelope Valley.
“We’re excited about our new Season of Service events, and we’re inviting residents to become engaged and make a positive difference,” said Trish Jones, supervisor of Community Services.
