The popularity of Lancaster’s Hometown Heroes Banners program has resulted in recognizing the achievements and artwork of local youth.
The city’s BLVD Community Recognition Program began just over six years ago and offers both residents and business owners an opportunity to “own” a piece of the revitalized BLVD shopping and entertainment district. As part of the initiative, the city developed the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to pay tribute to local service men and women by recognizing them with a special banner on The BLVD. The banners feature Antelope Valley residents who served in a combat theater (for at least two years) from World War I through the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and, if they’re no longer in the military, were issued an honorable discharge.
The program has been expanded to include high school students who have made significant achievements in academics, athletics and community involvement. The students selected as part of the introductory group were nominated by high school staff. The program also incorporates artwork that was displayed at the recent All Valley High School Exhibition at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History. MOAH management and local art educators helped to select the winning displays.
The new banners will be displayed on the BLVD for the next six months; nominations for the next set of banners will open in April with the images installed in July.
