Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) this week joined with a coalition of civil rights groups for a series of local events in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which may be threatened with extinction under President Donald Trump.
Organized by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and the California Dream Network, in collaboration with young undocumented immigrants, their families and supporters, “Rise Up 4 DACA” ongoing through tomorrow with events taking place each day this week in a variety of locations throughout Los Angeles County.
Introduced by former President Barack Obama in 2012, DACA allows people who were brought into the United States illegally as children to work and study in the country without fear of being deported. NBC News, citing several unnamed government officials, reported Aug. 25 that President Trump appears likely to end the program soon.
At an event Monday morning at the UCLA Labor Center, Harris met with young immigrants and vowed to fight for DACA’s survival.
“We will fight to keep the spirit behind DACA alive and to keep the words that were spoken in connection with DACA alive and true,” Harris said.
The rallies will continue today from 8-9 a.m. with banner and poster drops at the Los Angeles Street overpass of the 101 Freeway, and also from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. with a “phone marathon” of calls to the White House based at CHIRLA Call Center, 2533 W. Third St. On Friday, a rally in support of DACA will take place at the Federal Building, 300 N. Los Angeles St., Los Angeles.
