The Palmdale City Library’s Classics Book Club will discuss the book “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood on Monday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m., at the library, 700 E. Palmdale Blvd.

The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism. “The Handmaid’s Tale” won the 1985 Governor General’s Award, the 1987 Arthur C. Clarke Award and was nominated for the 1986 Booker Prize and the 1987 Prometheus Award. It was adapted into a motion picture in 1990, an opera in 2000, and is a current television series.

The Classics Book Club meets on the fourth Monday of every month from 7 to 8 p.m. New members are welcome to attend.

The Palmdale City Library is open seven days a week. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
