One of the largest organizations supporting students in Los Angeles County, LA Promise Fund, is opening its second charter school in South Los Angeles: LA Promise Charter High School #1 at 52nd Street and Western Avenue. LA Promise Fund has been an active partner in South LA for over twenty years. With expertise in co-managing middle and high schools with LAUSD – John Muir Middle School, Manual Arts High School, and West Adams Preparatory High School, LA Promise Fund is now deepening its commitment to South LA with this college-prep TV and film academy which will serve as a community hub that graduates college- and career-ready students. Additionally, the school offers laptops for all students, dual college enrollment, project-based instruction, a variety of college and television studio field trips.
Students, parents, friends, supporters, and elected officials will join together on Aug. 11 to celebrate the opening of the school. Speakers include Councilman Curren D. Price, Jr., District 9; Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson, District 8; Danette McBride, representing Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas; LA Promise Fund CEO Veronica Melvin; LA Promise Fund Board Chair Stephen Prough; and LA Promise Charter High School Principal Qiana O’Leary.
“LA Promise Fund has been a champion for student success in underserved communities for over 20 years. I am thrilled to see that they’re now opening LA Promise Charter High School where kids will be provided with the resources and guidance to pursue a college education,” said Councilman Price. “It is a priority of mine to support programs that help our kids go beyond their boundaries and reach their full potential.”
“With our charter schools, we’re building college prep, project-based learning environments that celebrate curiosity, collaboration, and resilience,” said Veronica Melvin. “I know that this high school will bring opportunities to the neighborhood and students that will open doors and expand their horizons.”
LA Promise Fund is developing a K-12 pipeline in South LA that will ultimately serve 1,200 students with a focus on TV and film production. The students will benefit from strong teacher involvement, a focus on 21st Century learning skills, and project-based learning. “I’m proud to be launching LA Promise Charter High School #1 in South LA,” said Principal O’Leary.
