Continuing to re-imagine jazz, the ever-ingenious Oscar- and multiple Grammy-winning pianist – and the LA Phil’s own Creative Chair for Jazz – Herbie Hancock will bring his newest mind-blowing explorations to life with his amazing band, who will perform a taste of Hancock’s much talked-about and highly anticipated new album (set for release in 2018), along with music from throughout his celebrated career. Making a stop in Los Angeles on his U.S. tour, Herbie Hancock (piano, keyboards) will be joined by Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), James Genus (bass), Lionel Loueke (guitar) and Terrace Martin (keyboards, saxophone).

L.A. native Kamasi Washington will return to the Hollywood Bowl with his decidedly contemporary musical approach and stunning live performance style, which has brought the legacy of 20th-century jazz to a new generation. Washington and his band are expected to perform, for the first time, new music from his upcoming EP, Harmony of Difference, which will be released on September 29 via Young Turks. Kamasi Washington (tenor sax) will be joined by Rickey Washington (flute and soprano sax), Ryan Porter (trombone), Dontae Winslow (trumpet), Brandon Coleman (keyboards), Cameron Graves (piano), Ronald Bruner Jr. (drums), Tony Austin (drums), Miles Mosley (upright bass), Patrice Quinn (vocals), and Battlecat (DJ / Turntables), as well as a 24-piece orchestra and 15-voice choir.

Ongoing exhibition:

The Hollywood Bowl Museum recently unveiled a new exhibition, Summer Nights: Jazz at the Bowl, which traces the history of jazz performance at the Hollywood Bowl from the earliest days of the swing era through today. With a selection of audio recordings from the Los Angeles Philharmonic archives, this exhibition showcases the instrumental, solo and festival manifestations of the genre. Summer Nights: Jazz at the Bowl is on view until June 2019.

The event wil take place at the Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N. Highland Avenue, Los Angeles, at 8 p.m.
