This week at USC, Russell Simmons kicked off his “Peace Initiative” by gathering youth from South Los Angeles to participate in a group meditation session and to abide by a formal pledge for peace. After speaking, Simmons, the Hip-Hop mogul and co-founder of RushCard, gave an inspirational speech and participated in a question-and-answer session. Simmons told the youngsters to stay positive and “surround yourself with people headed in the right direction.” He noted that failure can only happen if you quit and that true entrepreneurs should ask the world “what is missing” and then “go out and do it.” The students in attendance were enrolled in the Community Coalition Freedom Schools, a summer enrichment and literacy program that empowers students using civil rights history. Simmons presented Community Coalition Freedom Schools with a check for $25,000 from RushCard to support its efforts in South Los Angeles. Simmons has conducted similar programs in New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, and in Cincinnati.
